Harvey History:
The Harvey Clipper was a high speed two mast sailing ship
built with a wooden hull by William Webb in Baltimore in 1847!
The Harvey sailed from New York to California in 89 days
which was considered to be a fast trip. In 1848, California became a state of the Union. Although the Panama
Canal was not yet built, it was much safer to ship California’s natural
resources such as gold and timber resources by sea around the Horn than by land.
The Clippers had to be armed to fight off any pirates they might encounter.
